Orthopaedics is a branch of medicine that deals with the study, prevention and treatment of diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system. In its name, orthopaedics (Greek orthos – straight or upright, and paidion – child) contains the word child, which is why orthopaedics as a profession begins with paediatric orthopaedics. However, orthopaedics is today predominantly a surgical speciality, but it is precisely through paediatric orthopaedics that the importance of prevention and non-surgical treatment is reflected. Our orthopaedic team promptly recognises musculoskeletal problems that are crucial for natural growth, development and functioning, and offers conservative and surgical treatments.

Physical medicine and rehabilitation is aimed at preserving and improving the function of the musculoskeletal system, reducing pain and achieving and maintaining optimal mobility and functional independence at every age. Without surgical interventions, through expert, comprehensive and individualised care we help patients in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of various conditions and diseases that affect daily activities and impair quality of life. Our physical medicine and rehabilitation team places special emphasis on the development of natural movement in children and the prevention of permanent disorders.

Sports examinations are conducted by specialists in occupational and sports medicine and serve as continuous monitoring of the health status of athletes of all age groups. The aim of sports examinations is early detection of risk factors and discovery of diseases in athletes before the onset of symptoms. A sports examination is necessary to obtain a certificate of health fitness for athletes and is conducted in accordance with the Regulations on health examinations of athletes and according to sport classification. Depending on the type of sport, the scope of examination, the need for laboratory tests and the duration of the certificate of health fitness may vary. Our sports examination team is particularly concerned with the natural growth and development of child athletes and promptly detects unfavourable deviations.

Physical therapy encompasses individually tailored procedures that help reduce pain, improve mobility and strengthen the body. However, in children, depending on age, clinical presentation and the assessment of the physiatrist, various therapeutic modalities can be applied to encourage proper motor development and prevent neurodevelopmental disorders. Physical therapy is a key part of full recovery from injuries, surgery or degenerative conditions of the musculoskeletal system. Through exercises, manual techniques and the use of modern therapeutic devices, we work with children, young people and adults. Our team of physiotherapists uses the most modern methods to ensure children's natural growth and development, and to enable adults a faster return to daily activities or sporting challenges.

About paediatric orthopaedics

Children are not small adults

Paediatric orthopaedics is a subspecialty focused on the musculoskeletal system of the growing child – from the newborn period through adolescence and adulthood.

Because children grow, their musculoskeletal problems differ from those of adults. A child's body responds differently to deformity, injury or infection, and children themselves require a special approach to examination and treatment.

Fortunately, more than two thirds of paediatric orthopaedic consultations end with the reassurance that the child's condition is simply a growth variant – harmless and without impact on later life.
