Josip VlaiC, MD., Ph.D.​


Josip Vlaic, MD., Ph.D., is a specialist orthopedic surgeon with a subspecialty in pediatric orthopedics. He works at the Children’s Hospital Zagreb, at the University of Zagreb School of Medicine, and at the Clinic for Pediatric Medicine Helena.

After completing his education at the School of Medicine in Zagreb, he finished his orthopedic specialization in 2015. Since then, he has been working as an orthopedic surgeon at the Children’s Hospital Zagreb, where he treats children from their early days of life to adulthood. During his specialization, he further honed his skills at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, one of the leading pediatric orthopedic centers in the United States. As a resident, he was also a recipient of a scholarship from the European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (EFORT) and participated in the EFORT traveling fellowship program in Greece.

Deepening his knowledge and skills, after several years of working with children, he passed the subspecialty exam in pediatric orthopedics. Today, Dr. Vlaic examines and treats musculoskeletal problems in children, including issues with the feet, knees, hips, spine, and hands. However, through his work in the clinic and operating room, he has developed a special interest in pediatric knee issues, directing his educational focus toward researching knee diseases and injuries. He successfully completed a Knee Fellowship at the University Children’s Hospital Basel in Switzerland and The London Knee Fellowship in the United Kingdom, working with some of the world’s top orthopedic surgeons specializing in pediatric knees.

As a continuation of his clinical interest, in 2019, he defended his doctoral dissertation in the field of knee ligament reconstruction. Based on biomechanical research from his dissertation, he developed a new surgical technique for treating patellar instability in adolescents.

In addition to patient care, Dr. Vlaic actively participates as a speaker in numerous domestic and international orthopedic symposia and congresses. He is a member of several national and international orthopedic associations. In the field of pediatric orthopedics and knees, he has published several scientific papers in various international journals and co-authored two chapters in orthopedic textbooks. Dr. Vlaic’s academic work is recognized, and he is a member of the Orthopedic Department at the University of Zagreb School of Medicine, where he teaches students pediatric orthopedics.
